I have been working with Phakamisa [WDR partner] in the food bank for 30 years. Local supermarkets give us what they would otherwise throw away.
We get volunteers, some food and finance from the churches. At the weekend, drivers pick up the food and then during the week, the kitchen opens from 9 in the morning.
Food packages are given to those who are unemployed or over 80 years old. They give 50 cents to get 500g of sampa beans, cake and bread. If they can’t pay, they get a smaller portion.
I feel I’m helping in some small way. It also saves food wastage.
